Renown photographer, Craig Semetko, will be leading two #LeicaDestination workshops with Leica Acakdemie to India and Burma this October and November. We asked Craig Semetko to share the story behind this image.
“I was standing in Varanasi, India reading the poetry written on the wall. I was so struck by its message that I took a photo—not because I thought it would make a great picture, but because I wanted to document the words for me, personally. As I looked at the file on the back of the camera, I realized I could make an interesting photo after all if only something was in the upper left quadrant to fill out the composition—a cloud, a statue, anything. The moment I had this thought—literally the same moment—the dog came running into the frame from the right. And I don’t mean he meandered—he ran to the exact spot I’d hoped something would appear and stood there, staring at me, as if to say, “Well, here I am—take the damn picture!” I got two frames off, and he was gone as quickly as he appeared. I stood there, with goosebumps, somewhat freaked out by the experience. Later, when writing a master’s thesis on symbolism in photography I learned that dogs symbolize spirit guides between this life and the next. Still freaked out.
A few spots remain open for 2017 Destination workshops.
